Bengaluru, May 19, 2025 — In response to the intense and continuous rainfall disrupting daily life in the city, Bengaluru Member of Parliament, Tejasvi Surya, has urged companies—particularly in the IT and tech sector—to temporarily shift to a work-from-home (WFH) model to ensure employee safety and ease traffic congestion.
The appeal comes as Bengaluru experiences heavy downpours, leading to waterlogging, traffic snarls, and increased risk to commuters. Tejasvi Surya addressed the issue on social media, emphasizing the importance of corporate cooperation during extreme weather events.
“In view of the intense rainfall and traffic gridlock in Bengaluru, I request IT companies and other major employers to allow employees to work from home for the next few days, wherever possible,” Surya tweeted.
Impact of Rainfall on Bengaluru Infrastructure
Over the past 48 hours, several areas in Bengaluru have reported severe flooding, with major roads in Koramangala, Whitefield, and Outer Ring Road submerged. Commuters have faced long delays, and emergency services have been stretched due to the increased number of accidents and vehicle breakdowns.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru, forecasting continued rainfall for the next 72 hours.
Tech Industry Response
With Bengaluru being India's tech hub, housing offices for companies like Infosys, Wipro, and global IT giants, a shift to remote work could significantly reduce road congestion and improve safety. Several firms have already begun internal discussions on implementing remote working for the week.
Public Reaction and Safety Measures
Citizens have welcomed the move, highlighting the difficulties faced during the rainy season. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and report waterlogging to BBMP helplines.
Conclusion
As Bengaluru battles another season of torrential rains, the call for remote work reflects growing awareness of adaptive urban policies. Companies are expected to prioritize employee well-being and civic responsibility during this weather crisis.
