Raipur/New Delhi, May 21, 2025 — In one of the most significant anti-Naxal operations in recent years, security forces in Chhattisgarh neutralized 27 Maoists, including a top CPI-Maoist leader, in an encounter that took place in the state's insurgency-hit Kanker district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the bravery and commitment of the security personnel involved, calling it a decisive blow to Maoist extremism.
Massive Setback to CPI-Maoist in Chhattisgarh
The joint operation was carried out by the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF), and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the dense forests of Kanker. Among the slain rebels was a senior CPI-Maoist commander, believed to be one of the masterminds behind several deadly attacks on security forces and civilians in the Bastar region.
According to officials, arms, ammunition, and significant Maoist literature were recovered from the site. The success of the operation is being hailed as a strategic win ahead of the monsoon season, which often provides cover to Maoist movements in the region.

Reacting to the development, Prime Minister Modi expressed his appreciation for the tireless efforts of India’s security forces.

The Prime Minister also reiterated his government's commitment to eradicating Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) and ensuring lasting peace and development in affected areas.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated the forces, crediting the success to strong intelligence coordination and precise execution on the ground. He reaffirmed the Centre’s zero-tolerance policy towards Maoist violence and underlined the importance of empowering local communities to resist insurgent influence.
Impact on Maoist Network in Bastar Region
Security experts believe this encounter has severely dented the operational capacity of the Maoists in Bastar, a region long considered a stronghold of the CPI-Maoist. With the elimination of key leaders and ground-level operatives, the insurgent group is expected to face major disruptions in planning and execution.
Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister also visited the state police headquarters to congratulate the personnel involved and assured full state support for future anti-Maoist drives.
