May 20, 2025,Taipei: Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported a significant increase in Chinese military activity near its territory, detecting six People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, eight PLA Navy (PLAN) vessels, and three official ships operating around Taiwan as of 6 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
According to the MND, all six aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, entering Taiwan's southwestern and eastern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). In response, Taiwan's armed forces deployed aircraft, naval ships, and coastal missile systems to monitor the situation.
This incident follows a pattern of increased Chinese military maneuvers around Taiwan, raising concerns over regional stability. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve reunification.
Earlier this month, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te emphasized the importance of peace and dialogue with China while underscoring the need to strengthen Taiwan's defenses as a deterrent to conflict. President Lai reiterated Taiwan's openness to cooperation with China based on mutual dignity but stressed that only Taiwan's people have the right to determine their future.
The recent uptick in Chinese military activity coincides with the first anniversary of President Lai's inauguration, a period during which officials have expressed concern over potential Chinese military provocations. China has conducted multiple military drills near Taiwan in recent years, including "Strait Thunder-2025A" and earlier exercises titled "Joint Sword-2024A" and "Joint Sword-2024B," indicating a sustained Chinese military posture around Taiwan.
Taiwan's government remains vigilant, closely monitoring China's military intentions and warning of provocations around significant anniversaries and events. The international community continues to watch the situation closely, urging restraint and the pursuit of peaceful dialogue to maintain stability in the region.
