India Showcases Iconic ‘Chai’ at U.N. Event Celebrating International Tea Day

New York, May 21, 2025In a flavorful celebration of culture and sustainability, the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations hosted a special high-level event on May 21 to commemorate International Tea Day. Themed Tea for Livelihoods, Tea for SDGs,” the event spotlighted the economic, environmental, and cultural importance of tea, with India’s beloved ‘chai’ taking center stage.

Held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the event brought together diplomats, delegates, industry leaders, and tea enthusiasts from around the world. Guests were treated to a unique experience of Indian chai, brewed with aromatic spices and rich flavors, representing the diverse traditions of India’s tea-growing regions.

India, one of the world’s largest producers and consumers of tea, used the occasion to emphasize the beverage’s role in supporting millions of livelihoods, particularly among women and smallholder farmers. The event also underlined how tea contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including poverty reduction, gender equality, and climate action.

Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the U.N., highlighted the deep-rooted connection between tea and sustainable development. “Tea is more than just a drink; it is a symbol of resilience, tradition, and opportunity for millions of families. As we mark International Tea Day, we celebrate the farmers, workers, and communities that make every cup possible,” she said.

The U.N. designated May 21 as International Tea Day to raise awareness about the long history and cultural significance of tea worldwide, while also promoting sustainable production and fair trade practices.

As guests sipped authentic Indian chai, they explored informative exhibits detailing India’s tea heritage, innovations in organic farming, and steps being taken to make tea production more eco-friendly.

This vibrant celebration not only honored India’s centuries-old tea culture but also reinforced the country’s commitment to global goals of sustainability, equity, and economic development.
