Magnitude 4.4 Earthquake Strikes Bay of Bengal; No Immediate Damage Reported

Port Blair, May 20, 2025A moderate earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at 3:15 PM IST at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located at latitude 17.06°N and longitude 89.62°E.

The seismic event was situated offshore and did not result in any immediate reports of damage or casualties. Coastal regions, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, remain on alert, but no tsunami warnings have been issued.

This earthquake follows a series of recent seismic activities in the region. On May 19, a stronger magnitude 5.1 earthquake was recorded near Manaung Island in Myanmar. Experts suggest that these events may be linked to tectonic movements along the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian plates.

The Indian subcontinent is known for its seismic activity due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, approximately 59% of India's landmass is vulnerable to earthquakes.

Residents in coastal and island regions are advised to stay informed through official channels and to follow any safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
