New Delhi, May 19, 2025 — The Supreme Court of India has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe a First Information Report (FIR) filed against Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah over his allegedly derogatory and "shameful" remarks targeting Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a decorated officer in the Indian Army.
Controversy Erupts Over Minister’s Remarks
The issue arose after Minister Vijay Shah made controversial comments aimed at Col Sofiya Qureshi during a public event. The remarks, widely condemned across political and social platforms, were seen as disrespectful and communal, particularly as Col Qureshi is the first woman officer from Gujarat to lead a Republic Day contingent at Rajpath.
Multiple complaints were filed against Shah, prompting the registration of an FIR. The Supreme Court, taking suo motu cognizance of the matter and responding to petitions demanding action, ordered the formation of an SIT to ensure an impartial and thorough investigation.
SC Criticizes "Shameful" Conduct
In a strongly worded observation, the apex court criticized the minister’s comments, calling them “shameful” and unbecoming of a public representative. The court emphasized the importance of maintaining dignity and respect for individuals serving the nation, regardless of gender or religious background.
A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud underscored the constitutional values of equality, dignity, and secularism, stating:
“The statements made by a sitting minister against a decorated officer of the Indian Army are not just inappropriate but a direct assault on the spirit of the Indian Constitution.”
SIT to Ensure Independent Investigation
The Special Investigation Team will comprise senior IPS officers from outside Madhya Pradesh to maintain neutrality. The SIT has been directed to file a status report within four weeks. The court also instructed state authorities to fully cooperate with the investigation and to ensure that no political interference occurs during the probe.
Nationwide Reactions
The court’s decision has sparked widespread discussion. Veteran army officers, women’s rights organizations, and opposition leaders have welcomed the move, calling it a necessary step to uphold the dignity of armed forces personnel and deter communal or misogynistic rhetoric by public figures.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who has maintained a dignified silence throughout the controversy, has received an outpouring of public support on social media platforms, with the hashtag #JusticeForColQureshi trending nationally.
What’s Next
The SIT’s findings will play a crucial role in determining legal and political consequences for Minister Vijay Shah. If found guilty, Shah could face not only criminal charges but also disciplinary action by his party and the state legislature.
The Supreme Court is expected to review the SIT’s preliminary report in the next hearing scheduled for mid-June 2025.
