Bridgetown, Barbados – May 17, 2025:
In a major development for West Indies cricket, seasoned all-rounder Roston Chase has been officially appointed as the new West Indies Test captain, ahead of the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle. The announcement signals a fresh leadership direction as the regional team looks to build a competitive edge in red-ball cricket.
Roston Chase Replaces Kraigg Brathwaite as Test Captain
Chase, 33, takes over the leadership reins from Kraigg Brathwaite, who led the side from 2021 to early 2025. The appointment comes following an extensive selection process by Cricket West Indies (CWI), involving performance metrics, psychometric assessments, and leadership interviews.
Chase has featured in 49 Test matches since his debut in 2016, amassing over 2,300 runs and taking more than 80 wickets. Although he hasn't played a Test since March 2023, the CWI believes his experience, calm demeanor, and all-round cricketing skills make him the ideal candidate to lead the team into the new WTC cycle.
“Roston has the respect of the dressing room, a deep understanding of the game, and a clear vision for the future of West Indies Test cricket,” said CWI Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe.
Vice-Captain and Upcoming Test Series
Spinner Jomel Warrican has been named vice-captain, marking a leadership duo focused on discipline and tactical depth. Their first major challenge begins on June 25, 2025, when the West Indies face Australia in a three-match home Test series—the first assignment in the WTC 2025–27 calendar.
Shai Hope Opts Out of Test Leadership Role
ODI and T20I captain Shai Hope was also considered but chose to focus on his white-ball leadership duties. This allowed selectors to zero in on red-ball specialists better suited to the longer format.
Strategic Vision for the Future
The decision to appoint Chase aligns with CWI’s long-term vision to reestablish West Indies as a force in Test cricket. Head coach Daren Sammy praised the choice, saying:
“This is a new era. Roston’s leadership will help shape a team that’s hungry for success and focused on building consistency.”
